Colorado Alcohol Sampling and Tasting Laws

Last checked: November 6, 2026 (2026 Liquor Code PDF from the Liquor Enforcement Division).

This is not legal advice. It is a plain-English summary of public law. Rules change and local governments often add their own. Verify with the state agency linked below before you plan a tasting.
  • Tastings are local option: they apply only where the county or city has adopted an ordinance or resolution authorizing them, and the local body may set stricter limits. The retailer applies to the local licensing authority.
  • Tastings may be conducted only by a person who has completed a server training program meeting Liquor Enforcement Division standards and who is the retailer, its employee, or "a representative, employee, or agent of the licensed wholesaler, brew pub, distillery pub, manufacturer, limited winery, importer, or vintner's restaurant promoting the alcohol beverages."
  • Limits in the code: one-half ounce of spirits or one ounce of beer or wine per sample, no more than four samples per patron, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. within the store's selling hours, no more than five hours a day, and no more than 156 tasting days per year. Product must be bought through licensed channels, not given free by the supplier.

Verify

that the city or county allows tastings and what extra limits it sets.
