New Jersey Alcohol Sampling and Tasting Laws

Last checked: November 6, 2026 (both NJ ABC PDFs loaded).

This is not legal advice. It is a plain-English summary of public law. Rules change and local governments often add their own. Verify with the state agency linked below before you plan a tasting.
  • Tasting events at plenary retail distribution stores are free, confined to the licensed premises, and use product owned by and from the inventory of the host store.
  • The store must notify the Division of ABC in writing at least ten days before each tasting event.
  • Outside marketing agencies may take part only under a Special Marketing Agent Permit held by a New Jersey wholesale licensee. Only wholesale licensees that do not sell to New Jersey retailers are eligible. The process has three steps, and agency employees cannot take part in any tasting until all three are complete (including an ID card for each marketing agent employee).

Verify

that the supplier you work for holds an eligible permit before staffing.
